Biography

Professor at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IITR)

Dr. Saugata Hazra is a Professor in the Department of Bioscience and Bioengineering at IIT Roorkee and serves as a joint Faculty member at the Center for Nanotechnology at the same institute. An alumnus of IIT Kharagpur, Dr. Hazra earned his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois Chicago, USA. He further refined his expertise through postdoctoral research at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis and AECOM in New York.

Research Interests
His research interests encompass Structural Biology, Protein Engineering, Structure-based Drug Development, Biophysical and Biochemical Studies, Nanoparticle Synthesis and Formulation, and Computational Dynamics of Biological Macromolecules, particularly enzymes.

The Hazra Group focuses primarily on antimicrobial resistance, specializing in cloning, overexpression, purification, and biophysical and biochemical characterization of critical AMR proteins, with a particular emphasis on beta-lactamases. Their expertise extends to protein crystallization, the structural elucidation of novel proteins and co-crystals of beta-lactamases with various substrates and inhibitors. Additionally, the group excels in computational biology, including NGS data analysis, AMR gene characterization, comparative protein modelling, docking, and simulation, with a strong emphasis on the functional characterization of critical AMR genes and their proteins.
